  2. The Reality of Knowing What Works for YOU

A few days ago I went out for a glass of wine (that turned into a bottle) with a girlfriend and we had a conversation about her hair and how I think she should cut and dye it based on her skin color, face shape, and lifestyle. This conversation turned into knowing what fashion trends do and don’t work for YOU. Basically, just because a trend is awesome on Rachel Bilson doesn’t always mean that it will look equally as awesome on you.

    Things to be conscious of:

Clothing: Take a good look at your body and get to know what to accentuate and what to downplay. As we see things on the runway, TV, and on celebrities, we tend to think it’s “in” and will look good on everyone. Nope. Pick at the trends that are going to be best for YOU and your body. For example, if you have larger thighs and love the new colored shorts that are trending for spring 2012, you might want to get a pair, but NOT a super tight and short pair of those flashy tangerine shorts. Rock them the right way, not the wrong way!

Hair: Someone once told me that the best hair color for you is the one closest to your natural color. I am clearly not a blond, and probably wont ever be! Dark works for me because I have dark features and olive skin. Anything lighter would totally wash me out. I know this. That doesn’t mean I haven’t dyed it! I’ve just dyed it colors that I know work for me.

As far as cuts go, get to know your best facial features and learn to accentuate those features with appropriate cuts. Full frontal bangs probably won’t be the most flattering on you if you have a dominant nose. Side swept bangs would be the better option (less attention drawn to the center of your face).

Makeup: I am a strong believer that less is more! It is safe and doesn’t hide your natural beauty. However, it is possible to still get that wrong. Avoid trends that are going to not work for you and your best features. Do you really want to wear that daring dark purple lipstick when you have no eye makeup on and very fair skin? Probably not. Chances are it will look different on you than it did on Kate Moss in that Pinterest picture. There are better shade options for YOU that will brighten up your face rather than make you seem washed out and gothic.

Be daring and try something new! I encourage everyone to do it. It can be so much fun stepping outside of the normal box. But I encourage doing it in a way that will work for YOU.

  3. Why You Must Rock the Peplum This Spring!

Let me tell you… the peplum is HOT for spring 2012. This is a trend I truly adore and have seen on celebrities, such as Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. The following are reasons why you want and must rock the peplum this spring:

    • The short flared ruffles sits on the small part of your waistline. Thus, defining and flattering the waistline. Win!
    • You can find the peplum trend on skirts, tops, dresses, and jackets. The variations make it easy to mix a piece or two into your regular wardrobe.
    • The peplum can be dressed up or down with heels or flats. More bang for your buck if you can wear it more than once!
    • It is a classic look from the 40’s that is coming back this year. A modern twist to a classic look can be a lot of fun with all the new colors and patterns available!
    • Since the peplum is a vintage style, you can find it at your local consignment shops! I managed to come across a gorgeous and modest peplum garment over the weekend for only $18. Silly me for not getting it…

If you want to save money and get in on this, I suggest you look around your local consignment shops (if you can get over the smell and have the time to dig!) or take a quick trip over to Forever 21 and H&M where you can find pieces for roughly $30.

    Happy shopping!
